When he’s on the iPad, he can put the Kindle app as the main app, and use Slide Over to hover his mind map over the Kindle app. He can keep his mind maps in his account, and import/export them from iThoughts to his iPad and other devices. And my favorite mind mapping application, iThoughts, will import and export mind maps from Xmind.Ī normal person would think that this is a dumb idea, but I’ve heard Knightwise talk about stringing 8 pieces of software and 6 servers together with IFTTT to make something work, so maybe he’ll like this. I did some more digging and discovered that Xmind (at ) is actually a web service for syncing mind maps. But sadly, Xmind doesn’t support split screen or Slide Over either. Now that’s only useful if Xmind will do the hover dance in Slide Over, because the Kindle app does not. If implemented properly, you can actually have two apps in split screen AND hove a third app hovering in Slide Over. This means one app takes up 100% of the screen, but the other hovers over it at 25% either on the right or the left. But there’s also Slide Over which in iOS 11 allows a second application to hover over the main application. Split screen is precisely that, your screen is split into two different applications. It’s clumsy but there is a possible path to success. I have my 9.7″ iPad Pro running iOS 11, so I fooled around a bit to see if I could find a solution. Knightwise asked whether perhaps iOS 11 might fix the problem. Maybe they tried to emulate that in the iPad experience by not letting you have anything in split screen while reading? One of the joys of reading on the dedicated Kindle devices is that you can’t be distracted. I opened the Kindle app on my iPad Pro and confirmed that they haven’t implemented split screen, even though split screen came out in iOS 9 back in 2015! There could be a reason they didn’t ever deploy split screen on the Kindle app. Drives me batty.īack to Knightwise’s problem. It’s so stupid – the keyboard literally fills 40% of the screen. More than a year after the 12.9″ iPad Pro came out, Facebook to this day has not yet implemented the API to recognize this bigger device and give us the proper keyboard. It takes up at most 20% of the display leaving the rest of the screen for your application. The 12.9″ iPad Pro is enormous, so a full-sized, on-screen keyboard can fit quite nicely in a small area across the bottom of the screen in landscape mode. It’s up to the developers to use these APIs. Apple provides APIs (application programmable interfaces) to allow developers to do interesting things with their apps. Let’s listen to him explain this in his own words: In that way he can have his two windows up side by side and highlight his book with the stylus in one window while making a mind map in the second window. In the mean time, he’s using his Surface Pro 4, running Windows 10 with the Microsoft stylus. The problem he found though was that he couldn’t use the Kindle app in split screen and wonders whether iOS 11 would fix the problem. He was hoping to get an iPad Pro and use split screen to view the book on one side and the mind map on the other side. He outlines his talks using a Mind Mapping program called X-Mind from. He uses these highlights in creation of talks he gives to other entrepreneurs. He reads his books electronically in the Kindle app in ePub format, and he likes to highlight as he reads. Windows tablets let you run two programs at once by dragging applications to either side of its screen, while the app automatically resizes. Our old friend Knightwise is back with an interesting problem to be solved. Earlier this year Apple released its productivity-focused tablet, the 13-inch iPad Pro, and one of its banner features is the ability to use two apps at the same time. When Android does get a split-screen mode, it will be one of the last mobile platforms to embrace single-screen multitasking. “Split screen is in the works!” wrote consumer hardware director Andrew Bowers. “We’re working hard on a range of enhancements for Android in this form-factor-there are many things, like multi-window, that we’ve been spending a lot of time on,” wrote Android user interface director Glen Murphy. Members of the Pixel C development team held a question-and-answer session on Reddit to discuss the device, and promised that productivity improvements are on their way in future versions of Android. In particular, Android lacks a “split-screen” mode, in which two apps are placed side-to-side on the same screen so a user can, say, refer to a browser window while writing a document.

The Snooping Dragon: Social Malware Surveillance of the Tibetan Movement, Shishir Nagaraja and Ross Anderson write that while malware attacks are not new, these attacks should be noted for their ability to collect "actionable intelligence for use by the police and security services of a repressive state, with potentially fatal consequences for those exposed". Fang targeted aspiring politicians from 2011 to 2015, with a reported focus on Swalwell. Two researchers at Britain's Cambridge University who worked on the part of the investigation related to the Tibetans are also releasing their own report today. Known as Fang Fang, the suspected Chinese spy reportedly had sex with two mayors and targeted politicians to infiltrate US political circles. Once the hackers infiltrated the systems, they gained control using malware - software they install on the compromised computers - and sent and received data from them, the researchers said. They also discovered hacked systems in the embassies of India, South Korea, Indonesia, Romania, Cyprus, Malta, Thailand, Taiwan, Portugal, Germany and Pakistan. The government has set up an expert committee headed by the National Cyber Security Coordinator to investigate the spying of many Indian nationals, including veteran politicians, celebrities, by Chinese firm Zhenhua data. Jeremy Fleming, the director of the cybersecurity agency, is set to tell a British defence studies body that the Chinese Communist Party views. The researchers detected a cyber espionage network involving over 1,295 compromised computers from the ministries of foreign affairs of Iran, Bangladesh, Latvia, Indonesia, Philippines, Brunei, Barbados and Bhutan. The central government has become cautious about reports surfacing about China spy network. Britains GCHQ spy agency chief will warn Western countries Tuesday of the 'huge threat' from China seeking to exploit its tech dominance to control its own citizens and gain influence abroad.
